7 Signs Your Pool Equipment Is Costing You Too Much Money

7 Signs Your Pool Equipment Is Costing You Too Much Money

Pool equipment doesn’t have to completely stop working before it becomes worth replacing. Older or inefficient equipment can continue running for years while using more electricity, requiring frequent repairs or simply making your pool harder to maintain than it needs to be.

In Palm Springs and throughout the Coachella Valley, pool equipment works especially hard. Pools operate year-round, and long stretches of extreme summer heat put additional demand on pumps, filters and other components.

If you’re wondering whether it’s time to upgrade your pool equipment, here are seven signs your current system may be costing you more than you realize.

1. Your Pool Pump Is Older and Running Inefficiently

Your pool pump is responsible for circulating water through the filtration system, which means it runs regularly throughout the year. Older pumps may use considerably more electricity than newer variable-speed technology.

A variable-speed pool pump can adjust its operating speed depending on what the pool needs instead of running at full power every time it’s on. Because of that, upgrading an older pump can be one of the first places to look when trying to improve the efficiency of your pool equipment.

If your pump is getting older, becoming noisy or needing repairs more often, it may be time to compare the cost of another repair with the benefits of replacement.

2. You’re Constantly Paying for Pool Equipment Repairs

An occasional repair doesn’t necessarily mean a piece of equipment needs to be replaced. Repeated repairs are another story.

If we’re coming back to repair the same aging pump, heater or other piece of equipment over and over, that’s usually when it’s worth comparing what you’re spending on repairs with the cost of replacement.

That doesn’t mean every malfunctioning piece of equipment should automatically be replaced. One of our repair technicians can diagnose the problem first and help determine whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Sometimes a repair is absolutely the right call. But at some point, continuing to put money into aging equipment may no longer make financial sense.

3. Your Pool Pump Has to Work Harder Than It Should

Long pump run times aren’t automatically a sign of a problem. Pool circulation needs vary depending on the pool, equipment, season and water conditions.

But if your system isn’t circulating or filtering efficiently, you may find yourself running the equipment longer and still struggling with water quality. The pump, filter, plumbing and other components all work together, so a problem in one area can affect the entire circulation system.

If your equipment is running for long periods and you’re still not getting good circulation, it’s worth finding out why rather than simply running the pump longer.

 4. Your Pool Heater Isn’t Performing Like It Used To

A pool heater that takes longer and longer to warm the water can become expensive and frustrating. There are several reasons a heater may not be operating properly, and some can be repaired.

Age, condition and efficiency should all be considered when deciding whether an older heater is still worth maintaining. This is especially noticeable for homeowners who regularly use their spas.

If you’re heating the spa frequently and the heater struggles every time you use it, having the equipment evaluated can help determine whether it needs service, repair or replacement.

5. You’re Still Doing Everything Manually

Older pool systems often require a lot more hands-on management. If you have to walk out to the equipment pad every time you want to adjust your pool, turn on the spa, activate a water feature or control the lighting, pool automation may be worth considering.

Modern pool automation systems can make it easier to manage compatible pool and spa equipment from a central control or connected device. Automation doesn’t necessarily reduce every operating cost, but it can make your pool easier to manage and help ensure equipment is running on the schedules you actually want.

For many Palm Springs homeowners, especially seasonal residents, being able to monitor and control pool functions remotely can be a major upgrade.

6. Your Equipment Doesn’t Match How You Use Your Pool Anymore

The way you use your pool can change over time. Maybe you’ve added a spa or new water features. Maybe you simply use the pool differently than the previous homeowner did.

Sometimes the equipment sitting on the pad just isn’t the best setup for the way the pool is being used today. An improperly sized or poorly configured system can create performance problems and unnecessary frustration.

Before replacing individual components, it’s worth looking at the equipment system as a whole and making sure everything still makes sense for your pool.

7. You’re Planning a Pool Remodel Anyway

If you’re already remodeling your pool, it’s a great time to evaluate the equipment too. You don’t necessarily need to replace everything simply because you’re resurfacing or updating the pool.

However, a remodel does give you a natural opportunity to look at the age and condition of your pump, filter, heater, automation and lighting while you’re already investing in the property.

For example, homeowners may choose to pair new plaster or a pebble finish with LED lighting, automation or other equipment upgrades. Looking at the entire pool during a remodel can help you avoid finishing a beautiful renovation only to realize that aging equipment still needs attention.

Repair or Replace? It Depends on the Equipment

There’s no universal age at which every piece of pool equipment needs to be replaced. Some equipment lasts longer than others, and maintenance history matters. That’s why we don’t recommend replacing equipment based solely on age.

If a relatively inexpensive repair can keep a piece of equipment operating properly, replacement may not make sense yet. On the other hand, continuing to spend money on repeated repairs for an old, inefficient system may not be the best investment either.

The right answer depends on what’s wrong, the condition of the equipment and what it will cost to keep it operating. We prefer to look at what you actually have and determine what needs attention before recommending replacement.
